MEET PROSPER
"Fifteen years ago, I was a boy without dreams" .
Today, I am about to graduate as a Doctor of Optometry."
— Andey Prosper Yirsob, FACE Student
HEAR IT FROM PROSPER
We conclude our series The Fruits You Bear by hearing from Andey Prosper Yirsob, a final-year student at the University of Science & Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. Below are excerpts from a letter of appreciation he wrote early in 2025 to his long-time sponsor, Mr. Pierre Crevolin of Edmonton. It is reproduced here with permission from both Prosper and Pierre.
Fifteen years ago, I was a boy without dreams, without hope, and without direction. A boy struggling to survive in a family of five, with our breadwinner bedridden after a motor accident in September 2006. This was in Ejura, my hometown.
Fortunately, my father valued education deeply—even on his sickbed. Because of him, my siblings and I were privileged to attend school. But often, we had to leave early to sell water in the market to help support the family. We lived in a crowded compound house with two or three other families. Food was scarce, running water was absent, and electricity was unreliable.
The Lord finally shone His light on us when I was in Primary 4 and my brother in Primary 2. Through FACE, my family was introduced to Suzanne Eyers of Canada, of blessed memory. Suzanne, out of her kindness, took it upon herself to ease my family's burden by sponsoring our education. She gave my brother and me something we desperately needed—hope. She taught us that it was never too late to dream, never too late to pursue a future. Suzanne was a very kind woman, and my family and I will forever remain grateful to her.
When I completed Junior High School, Mr. Pierre Crevolin, my sponsor in Canada, graciously agreed to continue supporting my education through Senior High and even into University.
Today, fifteen years later, the boy without a dream is about to graduate with a Doctor of Optometry degree. Who do I owe this to? Firstly, to God, for granting my family and me strength to reach this point. Secondly, to FACE and my Canadian sponsor, Mr. Crevolin, for their generosity and unwavering support.
My family and I thank you so much for your goodwill. I know Suzanne would be proud of the person I have become today, though it saddens me that she is not here to witness the fruit of her labour. May she continue to rest in peace. My thanks also go to Danielle Richards and George from FACE, who were always in touch and supportive.
Today, I proudly call myself a "FACE boy." As I complete school this year, I am forever ready to give back to this charity that changed my life. When I begin practicing as an Eye Doctor, I hope to bring eye care services to people in remote areas of Ghana, regardless of their income. I am committed to dedicating my skills to serve others with care and compassion.
I am deeply grateful for the support I have received through FACE.
